Books I love

Book Review of The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

My thoughts on The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

I have heard Tim Ferriss recommend this book on audiobooks several times. He said it was the only or one of the few books he wanted to listen to again right away.

And I love reading. Though, I haven’t read a fiction book in such a long time. This turned out to be a fiction book and the first book that I have read by Neil Gaiman. I ordered the paperback version as I still love to hold the book in my hand.

This book won the 2009 Newbery Medal.

(I notice it is a bit challenging for me to give book reviews because I find myself not wanting to spoil the book for those who haven’t read it. So I will give a bit of my opinion. If you have read the book and would like to discuss it further or comment below, that sounds great. Otherwise, I will keep it short and sweet.)

What I loved:

  • This is definitely a book you can read in an evening or stretch it out over a couple if you would like.
  • It does engage your imagination quite a bit.
  • It is a different story than I had heard before. Very creative parts.
  • I felt several different emotions throughout the book, a bit sad, anxious to see what would happen, and also joy.
  • There are pieces of information I found myself wanting to know and then as the book went on being completely okay that I never found out.

Cons:

  • I was a little worried about where this book would go because of the beginning. I had no idea what the book was about just that Tim recommended it. I am glad I hung in there though. It was a great story.
  • I thought the goodbyes could have been a bit more, but maybe that is part of the point… that life transitions can be more beautiful and exciting than they are sad.

I think it would be fun to read a follow-up story on Bod and/or Silas.

I would recommend this book to those who want to read a creative, fun, and interesting story. It also reminds me that love and kindness can be found in the least likely places.

Fantastic speech by the author if anyone is interested. There are a few takeaways that are really terrific.
