Why Take Premarital Classes?

The big question has been popped and you said yes! You may be wondering, why premarital classes? I mean really, you guys are so in love and already know EVERYTHING about each other. Right?! Possibly.

Maybe you have even had tough conversations about your expectations of marriage and what values you plan to live your life off of. And if so, congratulations. Your relationship is headed in a fantastic direction.

Reasons A Premarital Class Can Be Of Help

  1. Baseline of strengths and growth areas. Some premarital classes offer an assessment of sorts for the couple to identify their current strengths as a couple and areas of growth as a couple. This can build a lot of confidence in the relationship. It also allows the couple to discover the areas they could enhance in order to strength their relationship.
  2. A setting to share. Sometimes we just don’t think about talking about certain topics until that life transition has already arrived. Such as parenting or sharing chores. Sex isn’t an easy topic for everyone. Why not start talking about this stuff before the big day? Make your foundation as sturdy as possible.
  3. Less surprises that you may not like. Because you are talking about a range of topics, there will be less surprises during the marriage. If a couple talks about financial expectations ahead of time, the couple is already working on making that a part of their relationship and may prevent arguments or broken dreams in the future. For example: if one of the partners wants to spend more and the other wants to save, it allows finding a plan from the beginning that the couple will shift as needed.
  4. Building skills. Premarital classes can help with building skills for your marriage. This comes in handy when differences arise.
  5. Starting with understanding. Premarital classes allows the couple to start their marriage with understanding each other and what marriage and all that comes with it, means to them.
  6. Divorce isn’t in the plans. When you work on strengthening your relationship, it lessens the chance for divorce. I know we want to think it should be easy all the time. In reality, we need to invest in our relationship daily to reap the benefits throughout the years. And sometimes that feels like hard work.
